Bladensburg, MD – Five people who were riding in a car that had just left a funeral at a cemetery in the nation’s capital were shot as they crossed a bridge over the Anacostia River into Maryland.

Bladensburg Police Chief Tyrone Collington, Sr. said the incident occurred at about 12:28 p.m. on July 14 in the 4300-block of Bladensburg Road after the victims left a funeral that had just been held at Fort Lincoln cemetery in Washington, DC, WTTG reported.

Chief Collington told reporters at a media briefing that the vehicle was heading towards Peace Cross in Prince George’s County when the shootings occurred.

He said it wasn’t believed that anyone inside the victims’ vehicle had returned fire.

The police chief said investigators do not yet know how many shooters were inside the vehicle that opened fire on the victims’ vehicle.

Five people who were wounded by gunfire were transported to the hospital for treatment, WTTG reported.

Details of the medical conditions of the wounded have not yet been publicly released.

The police chief said police were actively searching for any video of the incident.

Chief Collington said the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) and the Edmonston police were on the scene assisting with the investigation, The Washington Post reported.

Police have not yet released a lookout for the suspects and have asked anyone with information on the incident to come forward.
