Shreveport, LA – A uniformed Shreveport police officer was shot multiple times outside a residence as she was heading to work on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred in the Caddo Heights neighborhood at approximately 8:20 p.m., the Shreveport Times reported.

Officers received a report of “shots fired” and arrived to find the uniformed police officer “suffering serious bodily injury after being shot,” Shreveport Police Corporal Marcus Hines told reporters during a press conference on Wednesday night.

The uniformed officer was heading into police headquarters for her night shift when she was shot at least four times, to include a bullet to the head, according to FOX News.

She was rushed to Oschner LSU Hospital, and her relatives and coworkers soon followed to await word of her prognosis.

The officer succumbed to her wounds overnight, two city government sources told the Shreveport Times.

“We have lost one of our own,” the Shreveport Police Officer’s Association (SPOA) confirmed in a press release early Thursday morning. “She was young, and she was beautiful. She was proving herself to be a capable professional, dedicated to serving the Citizens of Shreveport.”

The SPOA thanked the citizens of Shreveport for their sympathy and support, and praised the efforts of the emergency room doctors and staff who “fought so hard with us last night,” the release read.

“We lift her family in prayer, and we thank you for allowing her to be a part of us. We stand ready to assist her family and her Academy Classmates,” the SPOA said. “Please continue to pray for the men and women that will work through night and every night to make Shreveport a safer place.”

Police have not released the name of the slain officer, but the two city government sources and numerous posts on social media have identified her as Shreveport Police Officer Chateri Payne, according to the Shreveport Times.

“Our hears [are] heavy with the news that Shreveport Police Officer Chateri Payne was shot and killed while in uniform last night,” U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy tweeted on Thursday morning. “She’d been on the force for only a few weeks.”

Officer Payne graduated from high school in 2014, and completed her police academy training in November, according to the Shreveport Times.

The investigation into the officer’s murder is ongoing.

“We can tell you that we are doing everything in our power to determine exactly what took place out here tonight,” Cpl. Hines said.

One person has been detained for questioning, but it was unclear whether police are considering that individual to be a suspect.

“That person was present at the home when police arrived,” Cpl. Hines added.
