Medina, OH – Police were searching for an armed woman inside the Cleveland Clinic in Medina on Tuesday afternoon.

“Police are on scene at Medina Hospital responding to a potential active shooter situation in the medical office building,” the Cleveland Clinic tweeted shortly after 2 p.m. Eastern.

“Both the hospital and office building are on lockdown. We advise no one travel to the Medina campus. We will continue to share updates,” they said.

The South Euclid Police Department also posted a warning on their Twitter.

“There is currently a potential active shooter situation taking place at the Cleveland Clinic Medina Campus. Keep all staff, patients, and first responders in your prayers as this horrible situation unfolds,” the message read.

Sources inside the hospital were sharing “Code Silver” alerts on social media that they’d received indicating an “active shooter situation.”

The alerts recipients to “take immediate action to protect yourselves and others,” WEWS reported.

Medina Township police told WEWS that alarm was triggered after someone in the professional building next door to the hospital reported seeing a woman with a gun.

“Medina Police responded to Medina Hospital regarding a female with a firearm threatening individuals. No shots have been fired. Police have secured the hospital and are searching the facility floor by floor. Please avoid the hospital until police give the all clear. Updates to follow,” the department posted to Facebook.

Medina Police Lieutenant Dave Birckbichler said officers were on scene at the hospital conducting a room-by-room search for the suspect, WEWS reported.

Police confirmed the hospital was on lockdown, but would not confirm whether any shots had been fired.

Reports that hostages have been taken remained unconfirmed.

UPDATE: Hospital cleared with no suspect found. Police now say that they believe that this was a “swatting” hoax.
