Logan Township, NJ – Police have surrounded a United Parcel Service (UPS) facility in New Jersey in response to reports of an active shooter situation in the building.
The incident began at about 9 a.m. on Monday morning at the UPS Mail Innovations warehouse in the 200-block of Birchcreek Road in Gloucester County, WPVI reported.
A law enforcement source told WNBC that a man entered the UPS building and fired shots into the ceiling before taking his ex-girlfriend and another person hostage.
No one was hit by gunfire during the initial shooting, WNBC reported.
Logan Township Police Department officers responded to the scene and could be seen carrying long guns and wearing protective gear, according to the New York Daily News.
“UPS is working with law enforcement as they respond to an active shooter situation at one of the company’s supply chain processing facilities in Logan Township, NJ,” UPS said in a written statement to the media. “We cannot provide information about the identity of people involved at this time.”
Video taken by witnesses featured audio of ongoing gunfire and showed officers taking cover before making entry through a door in one end of the shipping facility.
“From what I understand it was someone who did not work there that was having a confrontation with their significant other,” Ashlee Erickson, a witness who filmed some of the videos, told WPVI.
Erickson said that she knew something was wrong when she saw the evacuation.
“Then there was a massive police presence as soon as we were walking out of the building, there were a good ten cop cars, they all had their guns drawn out heading toward the main entrance of the building,” Erickson told WPVI.
Television images from news helicopters showed police cars surrounded the loading dock area of the UPS facility, located about 20 miles south of Philadelphia, Bloomberg reported.
Police have not yet released details of the ongoing incident.
Although numerous gunshots can be heard from inside the facility in videos of the scene, it’s not yet known if or how many people have been shot.
Ambulances were just beginning to arrive on the scene, according to WPVI.
The UPS facility is surrounded by a number of other occupied commercial building including warehouses for Home Depot, Amazon, and CEVA Logistics. Some of those facilities are on lockdown.
Logan Township Schools have been placed on “modified lockdown,” WNBC reported.
