Sebring, FL – Local news station WFLA is reporting “several people down” at an active shooter scene at a SunTrust bank in Sebring.

The gunman is now in custody.

The incident started around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday when a man called 911 to report that he had fired shots inside of the SunTrust bank located on US-7 South in Sebring, according to WFLA.

The town of Sebring is located about 2 hours south of Orlando.

Sebring police and the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and set up a perimeter.

The suspect was reportedly barricaded in the bank and had been holding hostages, WFLA reported.

The Highlands County SWAT Team established communications with the suspect and began negotiating with him.

“Negotiations continued – we did breach in the bank with the Highlands County SWAT Team. At that point the subject did give up,” Sebring Police Commander Curtis Hart told reporters.

The suspect reportedly walked out of the bank and was arrested by police.

Then paramedics who had been staged just outside the bank with stretchers rushed into the building through the glass entrance that had been destroyed to care for victims, CNN reported.

Police have not released the name of the gunman, and Commander Hart said he did not know whether the shooter had been injured before he was arrested.

The commander also told reporters that they did not know yet whether the gunman had a history of mental illness.

There was no information available about how many victims were at the scene and what their conditions were, WFLA reported.

However, Highlands County Commissioner Don Elwell confirmed that multiple people had been shot in what he called a “hostage situation.”

“I know there have been multiple people shot. These are civilians’ injuries and I’m not going into any more into that,” Highlands County Commissioner Don Elwell told NBC News.

He said he did not know whether the victims were employees or customers in the bank, CNN reported.

The sheriff’s office is asking families of anybody that was inside the bank at the time of the incident to go to the Inn on the Lakes on Gulfview Road for more information.

There will be a press briefing at the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office in Sebring at 4:30 p.m.

Officials said the situation was confined to the bank and officials said there was no reason for alarm in the community.

SunTrust bank released a statement after the gunman was in custody.

“We are working closely with officials and seeking to take care of everyone affected,” SunTrust Chief Communications Officer Sue Mallino said. “We will provide more information as soon as we can.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Rick Swearingen have both been in touch with Highlands County Sheriff Paul Blackman, Florida Today reported.

U.S. Senator Rick Scott tweeted that he’d gotten an update from the sheriff, and that he and his wife sent prayers to all involved in the tragedy.
