Birmingham, AL – A gunman walked into a Birmingham fire station and shot two firefighters on Wednesday morning, according to police.

The incident occurred at the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) Station 9 on 27th Street North in the Norwood neighborhood at about 8:30 a.m. on July 12, WVTM reported.

Birmingham Police Department (BPD) Chief Scott Thurmond said firefighters had the bay door open and were conducting routine morning maintenance when at least one male suspect entered the building and opened fire.

Two firefighters were hit by the gunfire, WVTM reported.

The victims were hit in their legs and chests, according to The Birmingham News.

BFRS Captain Orlando Reynolds said both firefighters were rushed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital in serious condition.

“In my 25 years on the job, this is my worst day,” Capt. Reynolds told WSAZ. “This is awful.”

Investigators have released no other details but said they do believe the victims were specifically targeted, WVTM reported.

Police are still trying to identify and locate the gunman, according to WSAZ.

The shooter allegedly fled the scene in a silver car, The Birmingham News reported.

Investigators urged anyone with any information about the attack to contact police immediately.
