Atlanta Homeowner Fatally Shoots Alleged Intruder

Atlanta, GA – An Atlanta homeowner fatally shot an intruder who he said was breaking into his home early Monday morning.

The incident occurred at the Landing Square apartment complex located at 3378 Greenbriar Parkway at approximately 1 a.m. on July 31, WANF reported.

Atlanta police responded to the scene after receiving a report about an attempted burglary and arrived to find a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The wounded suspect was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, WANF reported.

Investigators did not release the 26-year-old suspect’s name, WXIA reported.

Police said the homeowner and the alleged intruder did not know one another, according to WANF.

Atlanta Police Department (APD) Homicide Commander Germaine Dearlove said investigators are still trying to determine whether the incident was truly a home invasion and whether the homeowner acted in self-defense, WXIA reported.

“It seems that our victim may have been going into the apartment, but we don’t know whether it was intentional or whether it was a mistaken apartment, that’s what we’re trying to figure out,” Commander Dearlove explained.

The homeowner’s identity has also not been released.

It is unclear whether the homeowner will face criminal charges.

“Homicide investigators responded to the scene and are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the APD said in a press release on Monday morning. “The investigation continues.”

Investigators said they dealt with the same alleged home invasion suspect at the same apartment earlier in the night, WAGA reported.

He was described as having been “belligerent” during that encounter with police.
