Birmingham, AL – One of two Birmingham firefighters who were shot inside a fire station while at work last week has succumbed to his wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) Battalion Chief Tobias Jones confirmed that BFRS Firefighter Jordan Melton passed away on Monday evening as a result of the July 12 attack at Fire Station No. 9, WBRC reported.

BFRS Firefighter Jamal Jones, who was also shot in during the incident, remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Both firefighters underwent surgery in the wake of the attack and were initially expected to survive, WBRC reported.

The gunman has not been apprehended.

The shooter allegedly fled the scene in a silver car, according to The Birmingham News.

A reward of $15,000 is being offered by CrimeStoppers of Metro Alabama for information leading to the suspect’s arrest, WBRC reported.

Melton joined the BFRS more than one year ago and graduated from the recruit academy last month, Birmingham Mayor Randal Woodfin said in a press release.

“My heart is hurting today,” Woodfin wrote. “Jordan was a vibrant young brother who was full of life.”

He was a “wonderful son” to his mother, who the mayor said had been the wounded hero’s “rock” as he fought for his life in the wake of the attack.

“Jordan had developed close ties with his fellow firefighters, which makes this loss all the more tragic,” Woodfin wrote. “Birmingham Fire is so much more than a collection of employees, they are a family in every sense of the word. And right now, that family is in a lot of pain.”

“I ask that you join me in wrapping our arms around Jordan’s family today. They’ve lost a son, a brother, a friend and colleague. Know that we’re exhausting every resource to find answers and justice for Jordan’s loved ones,” the mayor said.

“Jordan paid the ultimate price for his service to our city, we will not let that sacrifice be in vain,” Woodfin concluded. “We are his family, and his memory will be honored.”

The attack occurred at BFRS Station 9 on 27th Street North in the Norwood neighborhood at about 8:30 a.m. on July 12, WVTM reported.

Birmingham Police Department (BPD) Chief Scott Thurmond said firefighters had the bay door open and were conducting routine morning maintenance when at least one male suspect entered the building and opened fire.

Two firefighters were hit by the gunfire, WVTM reported.

The victims were hit in their legs and chests, according to The Birmingham News.

BFRS Captain Orlando Reynolds said both firefighters were rushed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital in serious condition.

“In my 25 years on the job, this is my worst day,” Capt. Reynolds told WSAZ. “This is awful.”

Investigators have released no other details but said they do believe the victims were specifically targeted, WVTM reported.
