Lauderhill, FL – An elementary school student was arrested on Tuesday after he brought a loaded gun to his Broward County school, and pointed it at classmates.

“The investigation revealed that a 9-year-old student from Lauderhill Paul Turner brought a loaded .380 caliber Ruger handgun to school and aimed it at three classmates…” police said written statement, according to the Miami Herald.

The incident began at about 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 2 at Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary School when the child pulled out the gun and began threatening three other students with it.

“You see this, this is a real gun,” the child said, according to police.

The nine year old also made other threats and remarks that indicated he believed he was being bullied by the three children at whom he was pointing his weapon.

Police said the school resource officer stepped in quickly, and was able to disarm the little boy and take him into custody.

“They disarmed the child without any incident, and the school was rendered safe as soon as the child was disarmed,” Lauderhill Police Spokeswoman Yvette Marquez-Perkins said at a press conference, according to WPLG.

WPLG reported that the school was never evacuated and that it only took the school resource officer about two minutes to diffuse the situation.

Officials said they thought the little boy only intended to shoot those three specific students.

“The juvenile’s parents were visibly upset and denied the juvenile having a history of mental illness,” police said in their statement, the Miami Herald reported.

It was not yet known how the child obtained the loaded handgun.

He was taken to the Broward County Juvenile Assessment Center and faces three counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a firearm on school property, WPLG reported.

Broward County Schools said the principal sent a letter home with students explaining what had happened and commending the student who had come forward with information about the student having a gun, according to the Miami Herald.
