Tumwater, WA – An armed carjacker who opened fire on two separate motorists outside a Walmart store was fatally shot by an armed citizen on Sunday evening.

A total of three bystanders drew their weapons in the effort to thwart the gunman, KOMO reported.

The incident began just before 5:30 p.m. on June 17, when police received a report of an intoxicated driver who was traveling the wrong way near a Toyota dealership, The Olympian reported.

But the officers’ response to that call was interrupted by a report of shots fired at a nearby carjacking scene, according to CBS News.

The officers arrived to find that a 16-year-old female had been injured by the gunman, who then stole her vehicle.

Her injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

Meanwhile, the gunman drove to a nearby Walmart and abandoned the teen’s vehicle in the parking lot.

He then headed inside the store, and opened fire on a display case.

“I heard two bangs. It sounded like gunshots to me,” witness Robert Berwick told KIRO. “I looked down the aisle and saw a person running.”

“I looked over and saw hundreds of people running out,” another woman told the news outlet. “Just a flood of people and everyone was screaming and frantic… When we got about to the door, I heard someone say, ‘Gun. Shooter.’ And I knew something was serious.”

The suspect then returned to the parking lot and attempted to carjack another vehicle.

He shot a male occupant, who was subsequently airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, The Olympian reported.

“The shooter came up to my dad’s side – the driver’s side – shot him twice,” the victim’s son, Tyler Fievez, told KIRO.

Fievez said that his father was hit in the shoulder and neck, and that he was listed in critical condition.

“And when he shot my dad, he looked at my mom and told my mom to get the f – – k out of the car,” Fievez said.

He said that his mother disengaged the vehicle’s emergency break, but that her unconscious husband’s foot was still on the accelerator.

“So the car started spinning in circles, hit other cars [and] carts,” Fievez explained.

As the gunman began to carjack yet another vehicle, three armed citizens jumped into the fray, a witness told KIRO.

Megan Chadwick said that her husband, who was also armed, was one of the individuals who intervened.

“There were three civilians going after him [the shooter] to shoot him and two of them had their guns up,” Chadwick said. “And then the third guy shot him through the window of the car.”

Chadwick said that her husband watched as the shooter “took his last breath.”

No one inside the store was injured during the incident, according to The Olympian.

“I thanked him for saving my life,” Berwick said of the attempted carjacking victim who took down the shooter, according to KIRO. “He didn’t look like he had any regrets. I hope he doesn’t have any.”

Investigators said that the gunman’s motive was unknown, KOMO reported.
