Baltimore, MD – At least 30 people were shot and two were killed when a gunman opened fire on a block party in the Brooklyn neighborhood in Baltimore early on Sunday morning.

Police said the incident occurred just after 12:30 a.m. on July 2 while a neighborhood block party was in full swing in the 800-block of Gretna Court, WBAL reported.

Witnesses said they thought they were hearing fireworks going off when they heard the series of gunshots.

Terrifying cell phone videos posted to social media showed children running for cover as gunfire erupted in the background of the holiday celebration.

Acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Rich Worley said an 18-year-old woman was found fatally shot at the scene, WBAL reported.

A 20-year-old man was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Nine others were transported to local hospitals for treatment of gunshot wounds, WBAL reported.

Police said as many as 20 more gunshot victims were taken to area hospitals by private transportation.

As many as 30 people were shot in a mass shooting overnight in Brooklyn, Baltimore police said.

University of Maryland Medical Center Shock Trauma said it was treating 12 patients, WBAL reported.

The hospital said four more victims were being treated in the medical center’s Pediatric Emergency Department.

MedStar Harbor Hospital treated 19 gunshot victims, WBAL reported.

They stabilized and transferred nine critically-injured patients to Baltimore-area trauma centers.

Commissioner Worley said there was no suspect in custody, WBAL reported.

He said investigators were interviewing witnesses and checking security cameras in the area for any footage of the mass shooting.

“This is an absolute tragedy that did not have to happen,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said at a press briefing on Sunday morning.

“Anyone that knows anything about what happened here, anything about this mass shooting, come forward with any piece of information,” Scott pleaded. “Treat this as if it was your family and how you would want people to treat it as if you were mourning, as if this were an event happening in your community.”

The Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) blasted the mayor in a tweet blaming the lack of staffing and poor leadership of the last top cop for the violent massacre.

“Would anyone care to guess how many officers from the patrol shift were working in the Southern District at the time of this mass shooting? SEVEN (7)! Ten years ago there would have been 20 from the shift. The legacy of ex-PC Harrison is that 400 more cops left during his tenure than were hired. @MayorBMScott, this is unacceptable. You need to create a retention & recruitment plan NOW. FOP3 has offered suggestions,” the FOP tweeted.

Baltimore police said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was providing agents and K9s to assist in the investigation, WBAL reported.
