Lilburn, GA – A Georgia middle school student was arrested after stabbing a teacher on Monday with a butcher knife.

The teacher was only identified as a female, and was taken to the hospital, according to WSB.

Her condition has not been released.

The 13-year-old eighth grade student called the teacher over when classes were changing, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The student then took out an eight-inch knife and stabbed the teacher in the chest.

Gwinnett County Public Schools Spokeswoman Sloan Roach said the 13-year-old grabbed another female student after stabbing the teacher.

The 13-year-old was eventually talked down and disarmed by the school resource officer.

The students and the school resource officer were not injured. The 13-year-old student’s identify has not yet been released.

The school was locked down due to the stabbing but the lockdown was lifted at 3:30 p.m., according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

However, a letter sent to parents by Trickum Middle School Principal Ryan Queen called the stabbing “a serious incident” and said it happened during a regular class.

According to Queen’s letter, the student was taken into custody after stabbing the teacher in an eighth grade language arts classroom. The student was immediately apprehended and the other students were safe. Queen wrote that the teacher was conscious and talking to first responders.

WXIA reported that the 13-year-old would be charged with aggravated assault. Roach said the student is also facing disciplinary action from the district and is facing a charge for having a weapon on school grounds.

“This has never happened before at the school,” Roach said, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. “Our concern right now is for the teacher and her welfare.”
