Kansas City, KS – Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy Theresa King was shot in the line of duty on Friday morning as she and a fellow deputy were transporting an inmate to a hearing at the Wyandotte County Correctional and Court Services building

Deputy King, 44, died of her injuries shortly after midnight on Saturday, the Kansas City Kansas Police Department said in a press release.

She had been with the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office for 13 years.

Her 35-year-old partner, Deputy Patrick Rohrer, died of his injuries on Friday.

Deputy Rohrer served the agency for seven years.

The incident occurred at about 11:15 a.m. in a gated area of the court services building, Kansas City Kansas Police Chief Terry Zeigler said, according to The Kansas City Star.

As Deputy King and Deputy Rohrer pulled into the parking lot, “they were overcome,” Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Major Kelli Bailiff said during a press conference at the University of Kansas Hospital.

“It is very possible that with their own firearm they were both shot,” Maj. Bailiff said.

The suspect who shot Deputy Rohrer was also hit in the gunfight, KCTV reported.

It was not known whether the suspect was shot by one of the deputies who had been hit, or if a third deputy stepped in.

According to KCTV, the shooter was shackled and handcuffed.

He was expected to undergo surgery, police said during the press conference on Friday.

A spokesman for the Kansas City Kansas PD said there was video surveillance in the area where the incident occurred. He also said police believe the incident was limited to those involved, and authorities were not looking for any additional suspects.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy Theresa King, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Deputy Theresa King, your life mattered.
