Hero Down: Summit County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jacob Nees Dies After Off-Duty Crash

Akron, OH – Summit County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jacob Nees died on Sunday after an off-duty vehicle crash a day earlier.

The single-vehicle accident occurred on Aug. 5 near Broadway Avenue and Rockside Road, WTAM reported.

Deputy Nees was transported to a nearby hospital.

He succumbed to his injuries on Aug. 6, WTAM reported.

Authorities have said the crash remains under investigation.

Sheriff’s department officials said the rookie deputy had just been sworn into the department two months earlier when he graduated from the law enforcement academy.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office said that Deputy Nees had served as a parole officer before joining the department, WTAM reported.

Deputy Nees graduated from Mount Union with a degree in criminal justice in 2018, according to the sheriff’s department.

The deputy played drums in several local bands, WTAM reported.

“Deputy Nees will be greatly missed by our Office. We extend our deepest condolences to the Nees family and to Jacob’s friends and loved ones,” the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said in a tribute posted to its official Facebook page.

Condolences have poured in from other agencies across the state and country as soon as the announcement of the deputy’s death was made.

“Sending our deepest condolences to Sheriff Fatheree and the entire Summit County Sheriff’s Office in the loss of Deputy Nees. We are grateful for his service,” the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office tweeted.
