Westfield, NJ – Westfield Police Detective Eric Lieberman died unexpectedly on May 22, after having served his department for nearly three decades.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the unexpected and untimely passing of Detective Eric Lieberman,” the Westfield Police Benevolent Association wrote in a Facebook post. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and all those who loved him. Rest in Peace ‘Dude.’”

Det. Lieberman, 47, served in the department’s detectives’ bureau for nearly 18 years, according to his final radio call.

“Eric’s wit, humor, sarcasm, and laughter will truly be missed in the detective bureau, in the hallways, and in his spot at the shoe at the Westfield Police Department headquarters,” the call continued. “Detective Lieberman has answered his final call. Rest easy, Dude. We’ll take it from here.”

His father, Detective Lieutenant Phillip Lieberman, served the department for 30 years, according to his obituary.

Det. Lieberman leaves behind his wife, Tammy, and his sons, Tyler and Eric. He is also survived by his parents, as well as extended family and friends.

“Our condolences go out to his family, as well as to his colleagues at the police department,” Westfield Mayor Shelley Brindle said during a city council meeting, according to TAPinto.

The mayor also called for a moment of silence in Det. Lieberman’s honor.

“Today we laid our brother Eric to rest,” the Westfield Police Benevolent Association said on Saturday. “Words can’t express our gratitude to everyone … especially to the brothers and sisters from other agencies that covered our calls so all of us could attend.”

“Thank you to everyone that helped us send our brother Eric home,” the association said.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Westfield Police Detective Eric Lieberman, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
