Ville Platte, LA – Ville Platte Marshal’s Office (VPMO) Deputy Marshal Barry Giglio was murdered in the line of duty while attempting to serve a warrant on Monday night.

The Louisiana State Police (LSP) said the incident occurred in the 100-block of West Beauregard Street at approximately 8:30 p.m. on July 31.

Deputy Marshal Giglio, 65, responded to the scene and was assisting the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) with serving a warrant at a home when gunfire erupted, The Acadiana Advocate reported.

Ville Platte Mayor Ryan LeDay Williams said Deputy Marshal Giglio and a civilian were fatally shot during the incident.

The deputy marshal was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female civilian was rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds and remained in critical condition on Tuesday, KATC reported.

Police booked two suspects into the Evangeline Parish jail in the wake of the shooting, but one 18-year-old female suspect was later released without charges.

The other suspect, 23-year-old Vonteeko Lamar Anderson, has been charged with possession of a firearm in the presence of drugs and possession with intent to distribute schedule I drugs, KATC reported.

According to the LSP, the warrant officers were attempting to execute at the time of the shooting was tied to a drug investigation.

Investigators said they recovered a gun and drugs during the search of the home and charged Anderson with those offenses, but that additional charges may be forthcoming, KATC reported.

Additional details regarding what led up to the shooting or how it unfolded have not been released.

The investigation remains ongoing.

“This tragedy is yet another reminder of the sacrifices men and women in law enforcement make each and every day when they put on their uniform and badge, not knowing if they’ll come home to their families at the end of each day,” Williams said, according to KLFY. “Deputy Marshal Giglio’s ultimate sacrifice in service of his community will never be forgotten.”

Deputy Marshal Giglio’s law enforcement career began in 2008, when he joined the EPSO, according to his LinkedIn page.

He began serving the Ville Platte City Marshal’s Office in May of 2013.

“If there was something that need to be done, if there were festivals or there were fundraisers or anything going on in the community or the city, you could ask Barry to help you. He would be there lickety split,” former Ville Platte Mayor Jennifer Vidrine told KLFY. “My heart goes out to his family; heartfelt prayers and sending them strength and hopefully they can lean and depend on their faith to get them through this tragic time.”

Deputy Marshal Giglio leaves behind his son and his two granddaughters, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

A fundraising page established to help his family in the wake of their loss has raised more than $5,300 at publication time.
