Phalba, TX – Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office (VZCSO) Sergeant Jeremy McCoy died in a two-vehicle crash on June 11.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said the 36-year-old off-duty sergeant was traveling southbound on Highway 198 at approximately 4:15 p.m. when a vehicle in front of him stopped to turn into a private drive, WFAA reported.

Sgt. McCoy failed to stop and collided with the back of the other vehicle, according to DPS.

“One of Sgt. McCoy’s children was with him in the vehicle during the collision,” the VZCSO said in a press release the following day. “The child was flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Dallas with non-life threatening injuries.”

The driver of the second vehicle was also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, WFAA reported.

Sgt. McCoy succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The DPS investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

The VZCSO said the entire office is in mourning over the tragic loss of Sgt. McCoy.

Sgt. McCoy’s law enforcement career began in 2006, when he joined the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) as a telecommunications operator.

He was hired by the VZCSO as a patrol deputy in May of 2002.

That September, he was promoted to the rank of patrol sergeant.

“Jeremy was known for his infectious smile and a great sense of humor that never failed to lighten up a room,” his obituary read. “His sudden passing has left a huge void in the lives of those who knew him personally and professionally. However, he will be remembered for his service to the community and his unwavering dedication to protecting people’s lives.”

Sgt. McCoy leaves behind his wife, Tiffanie, three sons, and one daughter.

He is also survived by his siblings, nephews, and many friends and extended family members.

“Sgt. Jeremy D. McCoy lived a full life and loved passionately those in it,” according to his obituary. “His legacy of service and love will continue to inspire all who knew him for years to come. Rest in peace Sgt. McCoy, you will be deeply missed but never forgotten.”

Sgt. McCoy was laid to rest on June 20.
