Tarpon Springs, FL – Tarpon Springs Police Department (TSPD) Major Michael “Mike” Trill died on July 15 after suffering a medical emergency at his home.

TSPD Chief Jeff Young said in a video briefing that Maj. Trill’s wife found him unresponsive in the bathroom of their house at about 12:34 p.m. while he was off-duty that day.

His wife tried to wake him up and to render aid to no avail, so she called 911.

TSPD officers and Tarpon Springs Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, to include CPR and “advanced life support measures,” an emotional Chief Young said.

Maj. Trill was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:34 p.m.

“It is with great sadness that I deliver this message,” Chief Young said. “I want to thank the officers and fire personnel… that responded and tried to save Mike [and] everyone at Advent Hospital that knew and loved Mike as well for also trying their hardest to save his life.”

His exact cause of death was not immediately released.

Maj. Trill served the TSPD for more than 27 years, the department said in a press release.

“Major Trill was an incredible law enforcement leader and he will be deeply missed by all,” the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post in response to the video briefing. “We will keep Major Trill’s family and your department close to our hearts.”

Dozens of people offered their condolences to the TSPD and Maj. Trill’s family on the department’s Facebook page in the wake of his death.

“Major Trill was a giant in so many ways. His Love for his family was second to none. His commitment to the community was unimaginable. His faith was unshakeable. His smile and [sense] of humor was so predictable,” one message read. “Most called him sir, his closest of friends called him Big Papi. The lack of your presence will leave a gaping hole in this [community’s] heart. God Bless you and your family.”

Maj. Trill leaves behind his wife, Kelly, and his children, Micah, Ian, and Delaney, according to his obituary.

He is also survived by his mother and brother.

Maj. Trill was laid to rest on July 22.
