Statesboro, GA – Statesboro Police Department (SPD) Advanced Patrol Officer Ian Huggins died of multiple gunshot wounds on Sunday morning, after he was repeatedly shot by his wife, police said.
“It is with extreme sorrow and grief that the Statesboro Police Department must announce the sudden off-duty death of Advanced Patrol Officer Ian Huggins, in what appears to be a murder-suicide,” the SPD said in an afternoon press release.
Police responded to the Copper Beech Townhomes at approximately 2:36 a.m. Easter morning, after they received a report of possible shots fired.
They arrived to find Officer Huggins with “multiple gunshot wounds,” the department said.
“Moments after officers entered the home, Rebecca Boyett Huggins, his wife, took her own life with one gunshot to the head,” the SPD said.
Police and emergency medical personnel attempted to revive the couple before transporting them to the East Georgia Regional Medical Center, but neither survived.
The motive for the shooting was unclear, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is handling the case, the SPD said.
Officer Huggins and Rebecca had been married since Feb. 14.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Statesboro Police Department Advanced Patrol Officer Ian Huggins, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
