Jamestown, KY – Rhome Police Department Sergeant Robin Adair died in apparent drowning accident as he was recreating at a lake in Kentucky with his wife on Oct. 9.

Sgt. Adair, 61, jumped off the couple’s houseboat for a swim in Lake Cumberland at approximately 10 a.m., but his wife never saw him resurface, the Wise County Messenger reported.

He was not wearing a life preserver, and the area where he was swimming near the dam is known to have a strong current, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources spokesman David Baker told the paper.

Rescuers and dive teams searched for the sergeant for six days, and ultimately used a remote-controlled vehicle to locate his body in approximately 125 feet of water, the Wise County Messenger reported.

“They were able to secure him with that vehicle and bring him to the surface,” Baker said.

Investigators said that foul play is not suspected, and Sgt. Adair’s body was taken to the Russell County Coroner’s Office for autopsy to determine the cause of his death.

The Rhome Police Department issued a statement thanking the multitude of law enforcement agencies and volunteers who helped search for the sergeant in the days following his disappearance.

“Without them this probably would not have ever reached the conclusion,” the department’s Facebook post read.

Sgt. Adair served as a law enforcement officer for 25 years, and spent the last nine years of his career with the Rhome Police Department.

“He was one of the happy guys that never met a stranger,” Rhome Police Chief Sam Love told the Wise County Messenger. “He liked everyone he met and was always upbeat and happy.”

The chief said that Sgt. Adair and his wife often vacationed at Lake Cumberland.

“He always talked when he retired that’s where he wanted to move,” Chief Love told the paper.

“[Sgt. Adair] was very easy-going and cared a lot about this community,” local business owner Frances Sturges told the Wise County Messenger. “If he worked, he’d always be out there waiting for us when we closed up.”

“He was an awesome man. Very kind,” Masoud Farhadi, another Rhome businessman, told the paper.

“He was family man and was respected by everyone,” Farhadi said. “He always had something to say and something funny to share with others. He was just a great guy. We are all going to miss him.”

According to his obituary, Sgt. Adair enjoyed participating in community activities and often volunteered to work with children.

“He loved law enforcement and ministered to many people during his career,” his obituary read.

Sgt. Adair was also a licensed pilot and an avid skydiver, and had made approximately 100 jumps during his lifetime, the Wise County Messenger reported.

“He loved airplanes. You could show him a picture of a plane and he’d tell you when it was made and everything about it,” Chief Love recalled.

Sgt. Adair and his wife, Robin, had been married for over 20 years.
