Port Huron, MI – Port Huron Police Lieutenant Joel Wood was murdered in an off-duty triple shooting at an apartment building early Friday morning.

“This is a tragic loss for the Port Huron Police Department,” Port Huron Police Chief Joseph Platzer said during a press conference on Friday. “Lt. Wood was a great officer. He spent 23 years with our department… starting his career as a police cadet.”

Lt. Wood, 45, was one of three people shot by Joshua Bauman, 30, in the early morning hours of Aug. 24, MLive reported.

St. Clair County deputies responded to a report of “shots fired with multiple victims” at the Clyde Township apartment building just before 1 a.m., WXYZ reported.

When they arrived at the scene, they found a 57-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds.

According to investigators, Bauman is the female victim’s estranged husband, the Times Herald reported.

She ran to the male victim’s home in an attempt to escape the gunman, according to WXYZ.

The neighbor exchanged gunfire with the attacker, but did not hit the suspect, the Times Herald reported.

The neighbor sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, but was expected to recover.

Both victims were rushed to a local hospital, where the woman was listed in critical but stable condition as of Friday evening, the Times Herald reported.

Meanwhile, deputies were directed to a nearby apartment, where they found Lt. Wood dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

He had been visiting the woman, who worked as an administrative assistant for the Port Huron Police Department, when the attack occurred, MLive reported.

Bauman fled the scene and escaped into the woods, according to WXYZ.

Investigators were able to use his cell phone to track him to a gas station in Southfield, where he was arrested at approximately 5 a.m.

He was found in possession of a handgun, which police believe to be the murder weapon, according to the Times Herald.

Bauman has been charged with first-degree murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, first-degree home invasion, and felony firearms, MLive reported.

Lt. Wood leaves behind his wife of 18 years, Donna, and his children, Krista, Farrah, and Galen, as well as his granddaughter, Aviana, according to his obituary.

He is also survived by his parents, brother, stepbrother, grandmother, and many friends and extended family members.

Lt. Wood will be laid to rest on Friday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Port Huron Police Lieutenant Joel Wood, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
