Pomona, CA – After 15 hours, the standoff with a cop-killer in Pomona has ended with the suspect in custody, one officer dead, and one wounded.

The incident started Friday night at around 9:10 p.m. when officers tried to stop the suspect’s car for reckless driving. The driver led officers on a pursuit.

The suspect crashed his car at an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Palomares Street and fled on foot before barricading himself in an apartment.

The suspect then opened fire on officers through the closed apartment door, hitting one of the officers.

Officer Gregory Casillas, 30, rushed to pull the wounded officer to safety and the suspect opened fire again, fatally shooting Officer Casillas in the face.

The other wounded officer is in stable condition.

Police worked for 15 hours to try to get the suspect to surrender before they were finally able to take him into custody.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell held a press conference Saturday afternoon and said that the “actual investigation” would now start with the suspect in custody.

Pomona Chief Olivieri told reporters that Officer Casillas was sworn in as an officer in September 2017 and was still on field training at the time he was killed, according to LA Times.

“It’s a sad day for our community and a sad day for law enforcement in general. He left his family at home to protect yours,” Chief Olivieri told reporters.

Before becoming a police officer, Officer Casillas worked as a records specialist and a jailer with the goal of becoming a police officer.

Officer Casillas leaves behind a wife and two children.
