Hero Down: Pittsburg Police Department Officer Jeff Kessler Succumbs To Cancer

Pittsburg, CA – Pittsburg Police Department (PPD) Officer Jeff Kessler died on May 27 after a battle against cancer.

The longtime officer underwent treatment for cancer beginning in late 2021 and was unable to return to duty due to his medical condition, the PPD said in a press release on June 6.

Officer Kessler passed away at his home on May 27.

“Jeff proudly served the community of Pittsburg from March 24, 1997, until his passing, providing 26 years of faithful service,” the PPD said.

Officer Kessler served as a patrol officer, school resource officer, narcotics detective, neighborhood policing team member and marine patrol member during his law enforcement career and was most recently appointed to the PPD’s Outreach Team.

He was also a trainer and instructor for most of his career and spent more than 19 years as a sniper and entry team member on the agency’s Special Response Tactical (SRT) Unit.

“Those who knew Jeff knew that working in law enforcement and helping others were some of his prouder moments,” the PPD said. “He was known for his big smile, quick wit, and willingness to assist anyone in need. Officer Jeff Kessler’s selfless dedication to the Pittsburg Police Department and the members of this community will be missed.”

“Please keep Jeff’s family, friends, and work family here in Pittsburg in your thoughts and prayers,” the department added.

Hundreds of people offered their condolences to the PPD and Officer Kessler’s family and friends in response to the department’s announcement.

“Thanks to this officer for his dedicated service to Pittsburg,” one message read. “We have a loyal bunch of officers watching over our city. May God be with Officer Kessler’s family & let them know how much he was appreciated.”

“So sorry to hear this,” another person wrote. “Jeff was a big personality and a huge loss! Rest in Peace brother…”
