Pierce County, WA – Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel McCartney was fatally shot just before midnight on Sunday. He died in the hospital Jan. 8.

Deputy McCartney, 34, was responding to a call for a home invasion at a home off of 200th St. E near 46th Ave. During the 911 call, the dispatchers could hear screaming and a scuffle taking place.

He arrived at the home six minutes after the 911 call, and immediately started chasing the suspects, according to The News Tribune.

A few minutes later, there was gunfire, and Deputy McCartney was fatally shot.

The deputy was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center in critical condition, and died just after 2 o’clock in the morning.

“He ran toward trouble. He ran to protect somebody whose house was being actively broken into,” Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor told KING.

“He is a young deputy who signed up to watch over other people,” Sheriff Pastor said. “He had an ethic, an ethic in his heart for doing something for other people. Know that. People in the community need to know that.”

No arrests have yet been made in the murder of Deputy McCartney. One suspect was found dead at the scene but the other escaped, prompting a manhunt, KIRO reported.

Police said the escaped suspect was described as a tall, thin, mixed race or white male, with a large pointy nose, curly dark hair in a ponytail, and pock marks on the right side of his face. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie.

Deputy McCartney was married, and had three young boys. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years, and earned the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, among other honors, according to KIRO.

Deputy McCartney had been with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) for three years, according to a Facebook post on the sheriff’s department’s page. He was a Hoquiam police officer for six years before he joined Pierce County.

“Dan was a good guy and a good police officer,” Hoquiam Police Sergeant Jeff Salstrom told KXRO. “More importantly he was an extremely devoted dad.”
