Hero Down: Pickensville Police Department Chief Kendrick ‘Ken’ Barnes Dies Unexpectedly

Aliceville, AL – Pickensville Police Department (PPD) Chief Kendrick “Ken” Barnes died unexpectedly on June 26.

The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation is handling the ongoing investigation into the 37-year-old police chief’s death, but sources said foul play is not suspected, WCBI reported.

Chief Barnes’ exact cause of death was not immediately released.

The City of Pickensville announced Chief Barnes’ tragic passing in a press release the following day.

“It is with deep sorrow that the Town of Pickensville acknowledges the passing of Police Chief Kendrick Barnes on Monday, June 26th, 2023,” the city said. “We, the Town of Pickensville ask that you please be with his family, his friends, and his community during this time of grief.”

Chief Barnes joined the PPD on March 10, 2020, and was the department’s sole officer.

“He was a beloved officer, son, husband, father, and friend,” the City of Pickensville noted. “The community is at an overwhelming loss with his passing.”

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) said in a Facebook post that it was deeply saddened by the loss of the beloved police chief.

“Please keep Chief Barnes’s family, co-workers, and The town of Pickensville in your prayers,” the sheriff’s office said.

Dozens of people offered their condolences to Chief Barnes’ friends, family members, and coworkers in response to the city’s announcement.

“So very sorry for this tragic loss of life,” one message read. “Prayers for his family and community.”

God Blessing To Chief Ken Barnes’s Family,” another message read. “Chief Barnes will be miss and we all love him. May God Receive him With Open Arms In Heaven!!”

Chief Barnes was laid to rest on July 8, according to his obituary.
