Philadelphia, PA – Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) Officer Kevin Whetstone died on July 14 after suffering a heart attack three weeks earlier.

His wife, Stephanie Whetstone, said he also suffered a minor heart attack two years ago, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Officer Whetstone played basketball after work on June 22, but he wasn’t feeling well when he got home, Stephanie said.

He then collapsed and she said she initially thought he was having a seizure.

She immediately called 911.

Officer Whetstone was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered severe brain damage, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

He did not regain consciousness and was ultimately sent home on hospice care one week prior to his death.

The 55-year-old officer passed away at his home with his wife, son, and other family members by his side, according to his obituary.

Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 5 President John McNesby said Officer Whetstone “served his community and city with professionalism and integrity,” The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

“He was beloved by his fellow officers and colleagues,” McNesby added. “Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.”

Officer Whetstone served 10 years in the U.S. Army and National Guard prior to joining the Seta Transit Police Department in 2004, according to his obituary.

He joined the PPD three years later.

Officer Whetstone spent the last 16 years of his life serving with the PPD’s 39th District.

In addition to his wife of four years, Officer Whetstone leaves behind his children, Brooklyn, April, Teron, Kevin, and Quinton, according to his obituary.

He is also survived by his three grandchildren, his sister, nephews, nieces, in-laws, coworkers, and lifelong friends.

Officer Whetstone was laid to rest on July 24.
