Okemah, OK – U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Office of Secure Transportation Agent Kristopher Youngberg died in the line of duty on Oct. 5, as he and four other agents were driving home from a training.

Agent Youngberg, 41, and his fellow agents had just completed a training at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, and were traveling back to Amarillo, Texas in a department van, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

As they drove along the Interstate 40, the van collided with the back end of a dump truck that was making a U-turn in the median.

Agent Youngberg died of his injuries, and four other agents were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

“We lost one great man – a son, husband, father, and dedicated brother on the Team,” the Office of Secure Transportation (OST) said in a fundraising page established to help the five agents. “The other 4 men are in critical condition at hospitals in Tulsa and Oklahoma City.”

One of the injured agents underwent surgery to repair his pelvis, while another suffered a shattered femur, head trauma, two broken arms, and numerous burns and lacerations.

A third agent suffered multiple breaks and fractures in his right leg, a lacerated liver, a shattered left knee, and fractured vertebrae, and is expected to undergo many surgeries in the future.

The fourth agent remains in a coma, and suffered facial, rib, and femur fractures, as well as head trauma.

Agent Youngberg was assigned to Pantex, KAMR reported.

Prior to his eight-year career with the agency, Agent Youngberg served as a U.S. Marine Corps reservist for eight years, and was deployed to Iraq in 2005, according to his obituary.

He worked for a sheriff’s department and in private security before joining the Department of Energy in 2010.

Agent Youngberg leaves behind his wife of 15 years, Misty, as well as his children, Aspen and Easton. He is also survived by his father, sister, nephews, and many friends and extended family members.

He was laid to rest on Friday, according to the OST fundraising page.
