Orange, CA – Orange Police Department (OPD) K9 Bosco died from an undisclosed “severe medical condition” on Wednesday, his department announced.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of K9 Bosco,” OPD wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday. “Bosco was a loyal partner to Officer Damon Allen, and a loving family member.”

According to the department, K9 Bosco, a German Shepherd, had participated in a public demonstration on Wednesday, but was “uncharacteristically lethargic” when he returned home.

He was taken to a veterinarian, who determined he suffered from a “severe medical condition,” the OPD said.

“With deep consideration and heavy hearts, the decision was made to euthanize Bosco,” the department wrote. “He crossed the Rainbow Bridge…at 2400 hrs.”

K9 Bosco, who joined the OPD in 2013, was hailed as a hero in February, when he clamped down on the arm of 55-year-old Steve Montee, and dragged him from a pickup, KNBC reported.

Following a pursuit, Montee had held officers at bay for five hours.

Although he punched K9 Bosco several times in the face and head, the loyal officer refused to release the suspect until he received the command to do so.

K9 Bosco was credited with at least 60 arrest assists during his five-year career with the OPD.

“Rest In Peace, faithful partner,” the OPD said. “Your job here is done. We love you and will miss you.”
