Greig, NY – A New York State Police dog was fatally shot by his own partner on Monday.

New York State Trooper Shaun Smith responded to a scene, with his K9 Will, to assist the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office with the execution of a search warrant at a residence in Greig, NY, police said.

A pit bull ran from the residence and attacked K9 Will, and Trooper Smith fired his weapon at the pit bull, according to WKBW TV .

His bullet hit the pit bull in the leg, but then then ricocheted off the driveway and hit K9 Will in the stomach.

The police dog was rushed to the Countryside Veterinary Clinic in Lowville where he died, NYup.com said.

K9 Will was a 3-year-old Belgian-Malinois, who graduated from the State Police basic K9 school in April of 2017, according to WNYT .

The dog was named in memory of Trooper William G. Doyle.

In 1967, Trooper Doyle was shot and killed by prisoners who escaped from a mental institution in 1967.

Police departments and other public safety organizations offered condolences to the New York State Police via social media.

“RIP PUP YOUR SHIFT IS OVER JOB WELL DONE. MAY YOU CROSS OVER THE RAINBOW BRIDGE AND PLAY WITH OTHER K-9 Dogs,” the Eastern Duchess County Fire Rescue 1 wrote, on the U.S. First Responders’ Association Facebook page.

“Thanks for your service New York State Police K9 Will. Our hearts go out to the State Police after their loss,” the Camden Village Police Department posted.

“Sheriff Al Nienhuis and the men and women of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office wish to express their deepest condolences to the New York State Police and to the handler and family of K-9 Will. Rest easy, brave one,” the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office posted on the Officer Down Memorial Page Facebook story about the dog’s death.
