​Summerville, SC – North Charleston Police Officer Ryan MacCluen was killed by a drunk driver whose car struck his motorcycle on Thursday night.

Officer MacCluen was off duty, and riding his 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycle at 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 15 when he was hit by a Toyota driven by 29-year-old Whitney Brooks of Charleston.

The 31-year-old officer was transported to Summerville Medical Center where he died less than an hour later, Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers told WLTX. He was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash.

Police arrested Brooks on suspicion of driving under the influence. She was charged with one count of felony DUI involving death, which carries between one and 25 years in prison, the Post and Courier reported.

Brooks was a teacher at Burke High School, but school officials said she’d been suspended following the crash that killed Officer MacCluen.

She and her passenger were not hurt in the collision, WLTX reported.

Officer MacCluen was a 911 dispatcher for three years in Charleston County before he joined the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) in August of 2016, NCPD Chief Reggie Burgess said in a statement.

“His co-workers describe him as someone who loved being a police officer and a friendly person that always had a smile on his face,” Chief Burgess said. “He loved the opportunity to give back to the community he served.”

The chief said Officer MacCluen volunteered in the department’s community athletics program.
