Bronx, NY – New York Police Department (NYPD) Officer Alexis Martinez was fatally shot by his father during a murder-suicide incident on Wednesday, according to investigators.
The shooting occurred at a residence on Fteley Avenue near East 172nd Street on Aug. 2, the New York Post reported.
Police said the 26-year-old officer was asleep in bed when his father shot him in the head, according to the New York Daily News.
The father then laid down beside his son’s body and fatally shot himself, police said.
Investigators said the man used Officer Martinez’s duty weapon to carry out his plan, the New York Daily News reported.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
The motive is unknown.
Officer Martinez was a member of a baseball team comprised of law enforcement officers.
His teammates went to his residence at about noon on Wednesday after he failed to show up for a game and found the bodies of the slain officer and his father, the New York Daily News reported.
Officer Martinez joined the NYPD in 2018 and was assigned to the agency’s narcotics division in the Bronx at the time of his murder, the New York Post reported.
He previously served in upper Manhattan in the NYPD’s 34th Precinct, according to the New York Daily News.
Officer Martinez was also a graduate of John Jay College, where he majored in criminal justice, News 12 reported.
He was working towards earning his detective shield when he was killed, according to WPIX.
