Covington, LA – New Orleans Police Officer Ricardo “Jesse” Silva was killed in an off-duty motorcycle crash on Aug. 25.

Officer Silva, 26, was riding his 2017 Honda motorcycle southbound on Louisiana 1082 north of Covington, when Jennifer Robinson, 52, crossed into his lane while she was making a left-hand turn, the Louisiana State Police told The New Orleans Advocate.

Officer Silva, who was wearing a helmet, crashed into the right-hand side of Robinson’s 2017 Acura DMX, and was ejected from the motorcycle during impact.

He was rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

"Unfortunately, we have been through this before and it's extremely difficult to be going through it again," New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Michael Harrison told The New Orleans Advocate. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Silva's fiancé and family and we're offering our support during this difficult time."

Superintendent Harrison said Officer Silva was a “rising star” in the department.

Officer Silva joined the agency in November of 2016, and graduated from the police academy in December of 2017.

In April, he was assigned to the department’s 5th District, The New Orleans Advocate reported.

He proposed to his fiancé, Taylor Stevens, during his police academy graduation ceremony, and the couple planned to marry on Nov. 11 in St. Lucia, according to The Times-Picayune.

They had been together for eight years.

"I told him to hold onto her, because something like that doesn't come around often," Officer Silva’s father, Rick Silva, recalled telling his son. "Their wedding would have been beautiful."

He said his son was just beginning a new chapter in his life, and had recently purchased a home, a new truck, and his motorcycle, The New Orleans Advocate reported.

“I could not have asked for a better boy,” Silva said. “I loved him. I was very proud of him.”

He described Officer Silva as a “happy-go-lucky” person with a “smart-ss mouth,” who always had a smile on his face, according to The Times-Picayune.

"I couldn't have asked for anyone better than him," his father said.

In addition to his fiancé and father, Officer Silva leaves behind his mother, stepparents, 12 siblings, grandmothers, and many friends and extended family members, according to his obituary.

A fundraising account established to assist his family in the wake of their loss had raised over $1,600 as of Thursday afternoon.

Officer Silva will be laid to rest on Sunday.
