Galapagos Islands, ECUADOR – Nevada State Police (NSP) Lieutenant Lorin Correll died in a drowning accident on June 28 while snorkeling with his friends and family.

The 50-year-old lieutenant was on vacation with his wife and family when the tragedy occurred, according to his obituary.

According to the Nevada Police Union (NPU), the waves became unpredictable while they were out in the water, and Lt. Correll ultimately drowned, KSNV reported.

“Life-saving measures were attempted, but unfortunately he was not able to be revived,” the NPU said.

The NSP confirmed the longtime trooper’s death in a press release on July 12.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Nevada State Police Lieutenant Lorin Correll, who recently passed away as a result of a tragic accident while on vacation,” the agency said.

Lt. Correll began his career of public service in New York, where he served six years as an Aurora Volunteer Fire Department medic and firefighter, according to his obituary.

He joined the NSP in December of 2006 and served in both the Highway Patrol Division and the Parole and Probation Division during his years of service.

Lt. Correll was assigned to the agency’s Northern region at the time of his death, KSNV reported.

“He made a lasting and positive impact through his dedication, pride and service to Nevada and our communities,” the NSP said.

Lt. Correll worked hard to become the first Type 3 All-Hazards Incident Commander and Operations Section Chief in the State of NV under the Type 3 All-Hazards program, according to his obituary.

He deployed to Eureka County shortly before his death, where he served as Incident Commander and assisted with flooding operations.

“He relished the assignment and the team that he was privileged to work with,” his obituary read.

Lt. Correll had also completed all of the requirements to become a Certified Emergency Manager and was awaiting approval of his application for certification from the International Association of Emergency Managers at the time of his death.

In addition to his plethora of field experience, Lt. Correll also held two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree.

“Lorin will be missed beyond measure. He leaves behind a legacy of love and a huge set of shoes that will never be filled,” his obituary read. “While he was taken from us much too soon, his family, his friends, and his colleagues know that he is in a better place and we look forward to seeing him again. We will forever cherish the memories that we made with Lorin. His legacy will live on and he will never be forgotten.”

Lt. Correll leaves behind his wife, Lanita, as well as his children, Alec, Caden, Tate, and Avery.

He is also survived by his parents, sister, nephews, nieces, in-laws, his beloved dogs, and many friends.

Lt. Correll will be laid to rest on July 14.
