Cameron, TX – Milam County Sheriff David Greene died on Friday after suffering a heart attack while on vacation in Oregon in June.

Sheriff Greene’s body was returned to Texas on Monday evening, and a procession of law enforcement officers were on hand to escort the sheriff’s remains to the Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron, the Temple Daily Telegram reported.

The sheriff was on vacation visiting family in Salem, Oregon when he suffered a heart attack on June 26.

He was transferred to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland and put into the Critical Intensive Care Unit.

Milam County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Chris White posted an announcement of the sheriff’s passing on Facebook on Saturday.

“It is my sad duty to inform everyone that our Sheriff has passed away this evening, July 20, 2018. Sheriff David Greene was surrounded by family & friends when he passed quietly to be with our Lord & his ‘Little David,’” Deputy White wrote.

“Janell wanted everyone to know that she is immensely grateful to everyone for the huge show of support as Sheriff was confined within that ICU so far away. She told us that David enjoyed her reading all the kind words of encouragement and well-wishes, and he truly left us knowing how very much he was loved,” the deputy continued.

“Sheriff David Greene was a father, grandfather, brother, husband, friend, and a great leader, and we will all miss him dearly. We will continue to update everyone about service arrangements as they are finalized,” he wrote.

Sheriff Greene was in his third term as sheriff of Milam County, and he had served for 35 years in Milam County law enforcement, according to The Eagle.
