Leesburg, GA – Leesburg Police Chief Charles Moore died early Sunday morning, following a lengthy cancer battle.
Chief Moore, 60, was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer in October of 2017, WALB reported. It was his third battle with the disease.
Despite his illness, Chief Moore, a 38-year law enforcement officer, continued to work. He served as Leesburg’s police chief for the past two decades, and ran a lawn care business on the side.
“For the past three to four months, people would come up and when they heard about his situation,” Lieutenant James Vick told WALB. “They would stop officers, wanting to know how he’s doing and check up on him, and they would always have to go into a story about what he did for this family or what he did for the community.”
Chief Moore served as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for 10 years before he joined Leesburg PD in 1982, according to his obituary.
He worked for Lee County Sheriff’s Office for four years, and spent 11 years as the chief investigator for Crisp County Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Moore was the first elected president of Georgia’s D.A.R.E. Association, and served as a police academy advisory board member during his career. He was also a Peace Officers Association of Georgia district representative.
In 2001, Chief Moore founded the Leesburg/Lee County Foster Kid Toy Drive, which became an annual event.
“It’s just knowing that you’re helping somebody out and the smile that you put on the kids’ faces Christmas morning when they see the new toys that they have,” he told WALB back in 2007.
During a battle with colon cancer in 2013, Chief Moore volunteered to let community members cut his hair in order to raise money for the Special Olympics, WBTV reported.
“If my loss can benefit one of these children or some children going to the Special Olympics then I’m all for it,” he said at the time.
During his career, Chief Moore received many commendations, including Investigator of the Year for the Southern United States and Officer of the Year for the State of Georgia.
He leaves behind his wife, Sherry, his sons, Brandon, Brion, and Robbie, and his daughters, Jennifer, Kristin, and Christin, as well as his mother, siblings, and many other friends and relatives.
Chief Moore also had eight grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.
He will be laid to rest on Wednesday, WALB reported.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Leesburg Police Chief Charles Moore, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
