Los Angeles, CA – Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) Sergeant Douglas Campbell died from an “off-duty related injury” at an elementary school in the Hollywood Hills on Dec. 9, according to his department.

Police said the body of Sgt. Campbell, 46, was found at the Valley View Elementary School campus on Woodrow Wilson Drive at approximately 4:15 p.m., KTLA reported.

Investigators did not disclose who found the sergeant’s body, according to KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Lieutenant Chris Ramirez declined to comment on whether or not there were any obvious signs of trauma, and said Sgt. Campbell’s exact cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner-coroner, KTLA reported.

Homicide detectives do not suspect foul play in relation to the sergeant’s death, Lt. Ramirez told the Canyon News.

“It is with a heavy heart and extreme sadness we announce the passing of Sergeant Doug Campbell,” the LASPD said in a Facebook post on Thursday. “Doug will be greatly missed by the LASPD and LAUSD family. Rest easy sir, we have the watch from here.”

According to KTLA, Sgt. Campbell briefly worked for the Trinidad Police Department in California before he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1996 until 2000.

He was a 13-year veteran of the LASPD, according to his department.

In a Facebook post, Isaiah Brown recalled having first met Sgt. Campbell at Clinton Middle School when Brown was a student.

Brown said he was stunned by the sergeant’s shining boots and perfect uniform, and immediately began asking him “what seemed to be 1,001 questions.”

“He answered them all, and since that day we have been connected at the hip,” Brown wrote.

Brown described himself as a troubled youth, and credited Sgt. Campbell for helping to steer his life in a different direction.

“I was confused why this guy would invest in me,” Brown wrote. “So I asked him, ‘Why are you so nice? Why do you allow me in your office every day? What is a white man doing being cool with a black poor boy from the hood?’”

“He said, ‘Look at yourself. Shut your mouth and look at you!’” Brown recalled.

“He said, ‘In the Marines the only color that exist is green…And the end the day we are all green. We sweat, bleed and cry the same,’” Brown recounted. “’Just because your skin is darker than mines don’t make us different.’”

“He said, ‘Dude, I love you. I am proud of the good changes you’ve made and I want you to see yourself the way your [family] and I see you!’” Brown wrote.

According to Brown, Sgt. Campbell leaves behind a wife, Regina, and his children, James and Sydney.

“Sergeant Douglas S. Campbell was a devoted Husband, Father, Police Officer, and Marine! He wasn’t just a friend, he was my mentor, leader and life saver!” Brown wrote.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Los Angeles School Police Department Sergeant Douglas Campbell, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
