San Marcos, TX – Kyle Police Officer Fernando Solis died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday.

Officer Solis, 28, was off duty at the time of his death, WOAI reported.

San Marcos police located his vehicle parked near an apartment complex at approximately 5 p.m., and discovered his body inside.

On Monday, the department announced that there were no suspects being sought in connection with Officer Solis’ death.

"Our deepest condolences go out to Officer Solis’ family and to the entire Kyle Police Department," San Marcos Chief of Police Chase Stapp told WOAI.

“Solis will be fondly remembered by KPD staff,” Kyle Police Chief Jeff Barnett said, according to the City of Kyle website. “His tragic death leaves a hole in our family.”

Officer Solis served as a motor vehicle operator in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2011 until 2015, when he received an honorable discharge.

He joined the Kyle Police Department in February of 2017, and attended the police academy several months later.

In December of 2017, he began working as an officer for the department.

“We have many unanswered questions,” Chief Barnett said. “We know this is a difficult time for Solis’ family and his work family…what we need right now is to come together as a family to help, to listen, to heal, and to keep moving forward to serve the residents of Kyle.”

“We are grateful for the time that Fernando was able to be part of the family of brothers and sisters in blue,” the chief added. “Our family will be here for your family.”

Officer Solis leaves behind his sons, 6-year-old Andrew and 2-year-old Nathaniel, according to a fundraising page set up to help the boys.
