Hero Down: Kentucky State Police Sergeant Jared Boggs Dies After Brief Illness

Lexington, KY – Kentucky State Police (KSP) Sergeant Jared Landon Boggs died on July 3 after a brief illness.

The 39-year-old sergeant passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital while surrounded by his loving family, according to his obituary.

Sgt. Boggs’ exact cause of death was not immediately released.

The KSP confirmed the longtime sergeant’s death in a tweet later that day.

“It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Post 10 Sergeant Jared Boggs following a brief illness,” the agency said. “Please keep his family in your prayers.”

Sgt. Boggs earned an associate degree in criminal justice from Southeast Community College prior to joining the KSP, according to his obituary.

“He knew from a young age that he wanted to become a Kentucky State Trooper and when Jared set his mind to something, he could not be deterred,” the tribute read.

Sgt. Boggs graduated from the KSP’s Academy Cadet Class 84 on Dec. 20, 2005.

He spent his entire 18-year career with Post 10, serving Bell, Harlan, and Knox Counties.

“Jared was an accomplished KSP trooper, demonstrating exceptional commitment and integrity, work ethic, selflessness, and determination, always striving to be the best KY State Trooper he could be,” his obituary read. “Jared’s unwavering professionalism, character, exemplary service, and commitment were acknowledged in a well-deserved promotion to the rank of sergeant in 2017.”

Sgt. Boggs’ family said he loved being a public servant.

“He dedicated his life to serving and protecting the people of Kentucky and was so very proud of his career,” the tribute read. “He thrived on the brotherhood within KSP and his ‘Brothers-in-Gray’ weren’t just colleagues, they were family.”

Sgt. Boggs leaves behind his wife, Angie, and his son, Zachry.

He is also survived by his mother, stepfather, sister, brother, two bonus children, two grandchildren, uncles, grandparents, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Sgt. Boggs was laid to rest on July 8.
