Jersey City, NJ – Jersey City Police Department (JCPD) Officer Ramon Torres, 33, died of a gunshot wound to the torso on Sunday.

Officer Torres, who had been with the department for approximately one year, was off-duty at the time of his death, NJ.com reported.

Police responded to Officer Torres’ home at about 7:50 p.m., after they received reports that an officer had been shot.

They arrived to find Officer Torres in a “lifeless condition,” lying on the ground-level floor of his residence, NJ.com reported.

First responders administered aid to the officer until EMS personnel arrived at the scene, according to the Jersey City Patch.

He was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, where dozens of officers gathered to pray and await word of his condition.

Officer Torres was pronounced dead just after 9 p.m.

“Ramon loved serving his community, and we will remember him for his dedication to making our city safer,” the Jersey City Police Officers Benevolent Association said in a Facebook post on Monday. “In our mourning of Ramon over the coming days we will redouble our efforts to serve proudly in his honor.”

Officer Torres, who was also a boxing coach at the Christian Boxing Academy, graduated from the law enforcement academy in March of 2017, the Jersey City Patch reported.

He worked the midnight tour at the West District, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.

The Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor has launched an investigation into the shooting, and it has not officially been determined to be a homicide, suicide, or accidental. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office was working to determine the cause of Officer Torres’ death.

He will be laid to rest on Saturday, according to NJ.com.
