Bloomington, IN – Indiana University Health Police Department Officer Robert “Rico” Mayberry passed away from unexpected medical complications on Nov. 10, according to his department.

Officer Mayberry, 42, was an 18-year veteran of the Indiana University Health Police Department, Sergeant Skylar Luster told Blue Lives Matter.

“The loss of our brother and friend hit us hard as we realize there will never be another like him. His crazy antics and unique sense of humor is something that will stay with us forever,” Sgt. Luster said.

She said that the department has struggled in the wake of Officer Mayberry’s sudden death, but that he also left them with fond memories.

“Although our hearts have been heavy these past few weeks, I know many of us just can’t help but smile because when you think of Mayberry, there’s no telling what crazy memory you had of him,” the sergeant explained.

“He was so personable and went out of his way to make everyone he met smile. On and off duty he was a loyal friend and someone you could always depend on,” Sgt. Luster said.” He will truly be missed and always remembered as our brother, our thin blue line family, and once-in-a-lifetime friend.”

Officer Mayberry seemed destined for a life in law enforcement, according to his obituary.

He began working for the department in 2000, right around the time that he met his future wife, Clara.

The couple married in 2003, and have one son, Tyler.

“He adored his family and being a dad and loving husband,” his obituary read. “He was the neighborhood dad to many of the children…because he too was a big kid.”

Officer Mayberry was described as an unforgettable person whose “comedic and infectious personality left a lasting impression” on everyone he met, according to his obituary.

Officer Mayberry also leaves behind his, sister, nephew, and many friends and extended family members.
