Russellville, KY – Guthrie Police Chief Matthew Humble died at his home on Oct. 17, after a month-long battle with cancer.

After experiencing rapid weight loss and severe stomach pains, Chief Humble, 37, was diagnosed with advanced-stage liver cancer on Sep. 16, according to a fundraising page established to help with his medical expenses.

“Matthew is an amazing father, son, and friend to all,” the page read. “He and his family truly deserve the world.”

Chief Humble was admitted to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where it was determined he was not a candidate for a liver transplant, Guthrie Mayor Scott Marshall told WHOP in September.

His community rallied around him in the wake of his diagnosis, and held fundraisers to help the recently-appointed chief through his treatment.

“I don’t even know where to start, but the out pouring prayers of people all over the US [is] supporting myself and my family,” Chief Humble wrote on the fundraising page last month. “This has just been such [an] overwhelming week that only a spiritual miracle can cure. I love every one of y’all and may God bless you 10 fold for your support.”

Prior to being appointed as Guthrie’s Chief of Police in July of 2017, he served the Russellville Police Department, the Calvert City Police Department, and the Logan County Drug Task Force, according to his obituary.

Guthrie Police Sergeant Dean Blumel described Chief Humble as an “impeccable leader” who “led by example,” WHOP reported. “He’s a huge part of our community…and he’s dearly missed.”

Marshall said Chief Humble “had a vision” for the future of the department, and said they became “close friends” through the work they did together, WHOP reported.

“Chief Humble…was just one of those people that comes along once in a lifetime that you will never forget,” Marshall explained. “His name describes him to a ‘T’…Last name ‘Humble’ certainly fit his personality and his demeanor.”

“He will be forever missed and loved in our great community,” the Guthrie Police Department said in a Facebook post. “Please keep his family and friends in your hearts and continue to pray for them all. RIP Chief, we will take it from here brother!”

Chief Humble leaves behind his children, Malachi and Lily, as well as his parents, brothers, nieces and nephews, according to his obituary.

He was laid to rest on Oct. 20.
