Florence, SC – Florence County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Farrah “Maxine” Turner died in the line of duty on Monday.

Her death comes nearly three weeks after she was mortally wounded by a gunman while serving a warrant at a residence.

Investigator Turner and two other Florence County Sheriff’s deputies were attempting to execute a search warrant in the city’s upscale Vintage Place neighborhood at approximately 4 p.m. on Oct. 3, FOX News reported at the time.

The search involved allegations that a foster child in the residence had been sexually assaulted, and named a 27-year-old man as the suspect, Florence County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby told WMBF.

When the deputies approached the residence, the suspect’s father, 74-year-old Frederick Hopkins, opened fire with a high-powered rifle from inside the home, hitting all three of them, NBC News reported.

“They were ambushed very quickly,” Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott told the Greenville News. “As soon as they got there the ambush was in place.”

As Florence Police Department officers rushed to help the deputies, the shooter opened fire on them, as well, NBC News reported.

Sergeant Terrence Carraway, 52, was fatally shot, and three other Florence police officers were injured by gunfire.

Hopkins barricaded himself inside the residence, where he held an unspecified number of foster children hostage during the two-hour standoff that ensued.

“These officers went there unknowing the firepower this suspect had,” Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said during a press conference, holding back tears. “He had an advantage. The officers couldn’t get to the ones that were down.”

Due to the barrage of gunfire, the injured officers were unable to get to safety, and their fellow officers were unable to reach them, CNN reported.

Police utilized a mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicle in order rescue the wounded officers.

After speaking with a hostage negotiator, the shooter eventually surrendered and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, CNN reported.

Four foster children inside the home at the time of the incident were not physically injured, and were found hiding beneath a golf cart in the garage, Deputy Kirby said, according to NBC News.

Investigator Turner, who had been with the department for over seven years, was the officer who filed the paperwork to further the investigation into the alleged sexual abuse allegations, according to WMBF.

Hopkin’s son, Seth Hopkins, has been charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct as a result of the investigation, the Greenville News reported.

Hopkins has been charged with one count of murder for the death of Sergeant Carraway, and six counts of attempted murder, WSB reported. Those charges are expected to be upgraded in the wake of Investigator Turner’s death.

Investigator Turner was rushed to the hospital, and remained in critical condition in the weeks that followed, WPDE reported.

She underwent eight surgeries during that time, including an Oct. 16 procedure to amputate both of her feet, her mother, Katie Godwin, said in a statement to WPDE.

Florence Police Department Officer Brian Hart remains in critical condition, WSB reported.

Officers Travis Scott and Scott Williamson have been released from the hospital, as well as Florence County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Sarah Miller and Deputy Arie Davis, according to WBTW.

Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone announced Investigator Turner’s tragic death in a Facebook post on Monday night.

“Farrah was the ultimate professional, excelling at everything she did,” Sheriff Boone said. “She dedicated her life to serving the victims of the worst crimes imaginable. Please pray for Farrah’s family, our FCSO family and for our community as we mourn her loss.”

Investigator Turner’s friends and family described her as a “phenomenal, selfless woman of faith and a true hero to her community,” according to a fundraising page established to help support her in the wake of the shooting.
