Hero Down: Findlay Police Officer Douglas Akers Dies Of Self-Inflicted Gunshot

Van Buren, OH – Findlay Police Officer Douglas Akers died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at his residence on Dec. 31, 2018.

Officer Akers, 54, passed away at his home at approximately 8:15 p.m., 106.3 The Fox reported.

He joined the Findlay Police Department in 1991, and went on to serve his community for nearly three decades, according to his obituary.

“My father was proud to work alongside Doug for many years, and I grew up knowing his name as one belonging to a good officer and great man,” Jen Branson-Scala wrote on Officer Akers’ memorial page. “I wish you all comfort and peace in the days ahead, and will be sending many prayers and thoughts your way.”

Rhonda Nye wrote that she was “heartbroken” to learn of Officer Akers’ death, and said he was “an inspiration to those he met and helped.”

“Doug was an amazing man who touched the hearts of many,” his cousin, Brenda Jehle Akers wrote.

Several people took to social media to express their appreciation for Officer Akers and the impact he made in their lives.

“Thank you for your service and thank you for taking the time and talking some sense into me while in my trouble making stages of life!” Ray Dunson wrote in a Facebook post. “May peace and comfort be with your loved ones in their time of grief!”

Officer Akers made a “positive impact on thousands of people,” Branden Johns added.

“He played a huge role in saving me from myself,” Johns wrote. “I’ve always had nothing but respect for him…Another beautiful soul gone too soon.”

Officer Akers leaves behind his wife, sons, grandchildren, mother, and siblings, according to his obituary.

He was laid to rest on Jan. 8.
