Kansas City, MO – Fairway Police Department Officer Jonah Oswald died of wounds sustained in a gunfight with a car theft suspect at a gas station on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at the QuikTrip gas station off of Interstate 35 at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 6, the Shawnee Mission Post reported.

Lenexa Police Department (LPD) Master Police Officer Danny Chavez said officers had responded to the area of Interstate 35 and West 95th Street after receiving a report of a stolen vehicle.

Officers quickly located the stolen car, at which point the driver crashed into an LPD officer’s vehicle and fled the scene, triggering a pursuit onto Interstate 35 northbound, the Shawnee Mission Post reported.

The suspect later took the Lamar Avenue exit into Mission and headed to the QuikTrip on Lamar Avenue, Officer Chavez said.

Police said two suspects bailed out of the car and ran into the gas station, where at least one of them barricaded himself inside the bathroom.

Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the incident.

Officer Chavez said a multi-agency team entered the building and wound up in a shootout with the suspects, the Shawnee Mission Post reported.

Radio traffic captured the sound of gunfire at 7:57 a.m., according to the news outlet.

Someone was heard requesting an ambulance for an “officer down” moments later.

Officials announced on Monday night that the 29-year-old Officer Oswald had succumbed to his wounds, KCTV reported.

Officer Oswald had been with the Fairway police for four years, according to Fairway Police Chief J.P. Thurlo.

“I am heartbroken at the tragic loss of Officer Jonah Oswald, who made the ultimate sacrifice while carrying out his oath to serve and protect,” Chief Thurlo said in a statement. “Officer Oswald was an integral part of our team and made significant contributions to our department and to the Fairway community. We will remember him as a warm-hearted individual whose hard work and passion touched the lives of many.”

“On behalf of the entire Fairway Police Department, and the City of Fairway, I extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Officer Oswald’s family and friends. We recognize that their loss is immeasurable, and our thoughts and prayers are with them,” the police chief said.

Officer Oswald is survived by his wife and two small children, KCTV reported.

Prior to joining the Fairway police, he served the Buckner Police Department from July of 2018 to September of 2021, first as a road patrol officer and then as a reserve officer, KSHB reported.

“We have had many officers come and go from our department, but only one Jonah Oswald,” Buckner police said in a statement.

“He loved encouraging people to reach their goals in life, and he would always offer help wherever you needed him,” Buckner PD continued.

The fallen hero’s body was transported from the University of Kansas Hospital to the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday night, KSHB reported.

One suspect, 40-year-old Shannon Wayne Marshall, was fatally shot during the incident, the Shawnee Mission Post reported.

The second suspect, 32-year-old Andrea Rene Cothran, was booked into the Johnson County Adult Detention Center in New Century.

She is being held without bond, KSHB reported.

Cothran has been charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer in connection with the incident but those charges were expected to be upgraded, KCTV reported.

Both of the suspects were from Tennessee, KSHB reported.
