Fairborn, OH – Fairborn Police Detective Steven Jahns died unexpectedly on the evening of April 9, his department announced on Wednesday.

Det. Jahns, a 23-year-veteran of the Fairborn Police Department (FPD), had also been an adjunct instructor at Wright State University for the past two years, the Dayton Daily News reported.

He was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police New City Lodge 48, where he served “several terms” as an executive board member, according to a fundraising page established to assist with his funeral costs.

“Steve was a caring soul who put his heart into his work,” the page read. “He was a dependable friend who could always be counted on.”

Det. Jahns served as a D.A.R.E. officer during his career, and also spent time with the patrol and detective divisions.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Det. Jahns investigated more than 100 cases annually during the 14 years he served as a detective, and had a clearance rate higher than 80 percent.

Det. Jahns was also active in providing comprehensive services to crime victims.

In 2013, he obtained his master’s degree at Wright State University.

Det. Jahns often spoke of his beloved children, Molli and Craig, and was engaged to be married to his fiance, Jennifer, the FPD said.

His daughter Molli is a student at The Ohio State University. His son Craig is an Army veteran who is attending a local fire academy, according to the fundraising page.

Det. Jahns was also survived by his mother, Nancy Jahns-Taylor, his grandson, Liam Jahns, and many extended family members and lifelong friends, his obituary noted.

He will be laid to rest on Saturday, according to the Dayton Daily News.
