Durham, NC – Durham County Sheriff’s Detention Officer Brooklyn Maynard was killed off duty when her personal vehicle was struck by a car involved in a police chase.

Detention Officer Maynard, 24, was driving her Hyundai Sonata in the area of Northgate Mall at about 7:45 p.m. on Aug. 2 when she was T-boned by a stolen vehicle that was running from police, according to WTVD.

She was killed in the collision that ended the 10-minute police chase.

The Honda Accord, which police said had been stolen at gunpoint, also struck a Chevrolet Impala in the crash, injuring its occupants. No police vehicles were involved in the wreck, WTVD reported.

Police arrested both men in the suspect vehicle.

Durham police said the driver of the stolen Honda was facing charges of second-degree murder, felony fleeing to elude causing death, felony death by motor vehicle, failure to stop for a red light, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, WTVD reported.

The passenger will only faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle.

Detention Officer Maynard joined the Durham County Sheriff’s Office in November of 2017, and recently graduated from the Sheriff’s Office Basic Detention Officer Training Academy, according to WTVD.

She is survived by her 4-year-old daughter.

“The Durham County Sheriff’s Office would like to express their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Brooke Maynard,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement. “Her dedication and hard work in her short time with us will leave a lasting impression on all of her Sheriff’s Office family. During this difficult time the Sheriff’s Office requests that her family and coworkers be allowed to process the loss of Brooke and grieve in private.”
