​Dundee, Mich. – The police chief of the Village of Dundee was found dead at his home on Monday. His death is believed to be from natural causes.

In a statement, Dundee Village Manager David Uhl said that Chief Todd Opperman died at noon on Dec. 18.

“Chief Opperman had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement and he was a valued member of the Village,” Uhl said, according to WTVG-TV. “The Village would like to convey its sincere condolences to Chief Opperman’s family.”

Uhl said that Chief Opperman, 42, just had a medical procedure done at the University of Michigan the day before his death, and had returned home.

“He was fine but he called and said he wasn’t going to be working today,” Uhl said Dec. 18, according to the Monroe News.

The newspaper reported that Chief Opperman’s father went to check on his son at lunchtime, and found him dead.

Details of the medical procedure have not been released.

The Dundee Police Department had three full-time officers, including Opperman, and 12 part-time officers. Dundee is about 30 miles north of Toledo.

Uhl said the village has not yet discussed what it will do to replace Opperman, but likely will appoint an interim chief.

“It’s shocking,” Uhl said. “It is a big loss for the community. It is any time you something like this happens.”

Chief Opperman became chief in 2015, when he was appointed to succeed Uhl, the Toledo Blade reported.
