Detroit, MI – Detroit Police Officer Fadi Shukur died in the line of duty on Wednesday, after he was struck by a vehicle while assisting with crowd control on Aug. 4.

Officer Shukur, 30, was walking to his patrol vehicle in the 18000-block of West McNichols on the city’s west side at approximately 2:40 a.m., after he finished helping other officers with crowd control associated with a nearby vigil, The Detroit News reported.

As the officer was walking, a Jeep Liberty sped through the area, weaving between the flashing lights of the multiple patrol vehicles, and slammed into Officer Shukur, WJBK reported.

The driver, later identified as 19-year-old Jonathan David Cole, then fled the scene.

Officer Shukur was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, and remained on life support until his passing, WDIV reported.

Cole turned himself in to police later on the day of the collision, and was taken into custody, WDIV reported.

On Aug. 7, he was charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment, and reckless driving causing serious impairment to a bodily function.

On Aug. 15, those charges were amended to second-degree murder, failure to stop at a scene of an accident when at fault resulting in death, and reckless driving causing death, The Detroit News reported. He was due back in court on Thursday.

During his first arraignment, prosecutors alleged that Cole’s parents had destroyed “key evidence,” in the case, but did not specify what the evidence was, according to WJBK.

The prosecutor further claimed that Cole had consumed water and apple cider vinegar in an effort to flush his system.

Officer Shukur, a one-year veteran of the force, married his wife just one month ago, according to WJBK.

“Everyone’s heart is broken in the city for a good man, a newlywed,” Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said during a joint press conference with Police Chief James Craig on Wednesday. “Our prayers are with his family.”

“One of the heart-breaking things about all of this is Shukur and his fellow officers were doing what they’re supposed to do,” Duggan added. “Officer Shukur died a hero. He was out preventing an incident from potentially happening. Fadi Shukur died protecting the city.”

Chief Craig said Officer Shukur would be remembered for his “magnetic smile,” that had the power to “light a room up,” The Detroit News reported.

“Certainly, in his short time [on the force], he made a difference,” Chief Craig said. “It’s another dark day.”

The city and private donors will cover the expenses associated with Officer Shukur’s funeral.
