Nashville, TN – Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Officer Lawanda Steele-Williams was murdered on Sunday, after her husband shot her in their kitchen and turned the weapon on himself.

Corrections Officer Steele-Williams, 53, had been married to her husband, Kirk Williams, 49, for just 18 months, the Tennessean reported.

“It is with extreme sadness the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office mourns the passing of Offender Re-Entry Center correctional officer Lawanda Steele,” Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall said in a tweet on Monday.

“None of us are ever prepared for such an untimely death and our employees need your prayers and support,” Sheriff Hall said. “Our thoughts are with her family as they come to terms with this horrible news.”

Police responded to the couple’s home just before 6 p.m., after Corrections Officer Steele-Williams’ daughter, who hadn’t spoken to her mother since Friday, went to the residence and found the doors locked, the Tennessean reported.

She told officers that she called her mother from outside the home, and that she could hear her phone ringing inside.

Police entered the residence, and found the couple dead on the floor of the kitchen area, with gunshot wounds to their heads.

A semi-automatic handgun was lying on the ground between their bodies.

Investigators said Williams murdered his wife before he turned the gun on himself, WKRN reported.

It was unclear whether or not police identified a possible motive for the murder-suicide.

Corrections Officer Steele-Williams was a six-year veteran of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, according to the Tennessean.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Officer Lawanda Steele-Williams, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
