Dallas, TX – Dallas Police Senior Corporal Earl “Jamie” Givens was providing a motorcycle escort during a funeral procession for another fallen officer on Saturday morning when he was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver.

Cpl. Givens, 55, and other members of the Dallas Motorcycle Unit were escorting the body of Dallas Senior Corporal Tyrone Andrews from a Dallas funeral home to another location in east Texas at approximately 5:30 a.m., Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall said during a Saturday press conference outside Baylor University Medical Center.

A memorial service for Cpl. Andrews, who passed away after a battle with cancer, is scheduled to take place in Marion, Louisiana on Saturday afternoon, WVIT reported.

“During the escort, Senior Corporal Earl ‘Jamie’ Givens positioned himself to block oncoming traffic to the eastbound entrance ramp of Interstate 20 at Bonnie View Road,” Chief Hall explained. “Senior Corporal Givens was stationary, and his motorcycle had the emergency lights emulating.”

The driver of a Kia Sportage suddenly slammed into the corporal at a high rate of speed, the chief said.

“His fellow officers immediately turned around and rendered aid,” Chief Hall recounted. “Senior Corporal Givens was pronounced deceased upon his arrival here at Baylor Hospital.”

After hitting Cpl. Givens, the unnamed 25-year-old driver of the Kia crashed into a concrete divider. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, the chief said.

According to KDFW, a source said the suspect’s blood-alcohol content was .19 at the time of his arrest.

Cpl. Givens, a 32-year-veteran of the force, had served in the motorcycle unit since 2012, Chief Hall said.

“He was a great guy with a great, big heart,” longtime friend and Dallas Police Association Vice President Fred Frazier told The Dallas Morning News. “How tragic could this be? He’s escorting a fallen officer to make sure that he’s honored the way he would want to be honored, and he gets killed by a drunk driver.”

Cpl. Givens, a father of two young adult sons, was an active fundraiser for numerous charities, including the Assist the Officer Foundation, Frazier said.

The foundation is now collecting donations to assist the fallen corporal’s children, he added.
